GB Energy Supply ceases trading – Guide for customers

Sunday, November 27, 2016

GB Energy Supply, one of the newest, and in the past cheapest energy suppliers, has ceased trading.  160,000 customers, have been attracted to the company over the past couple of years because of their market leading cheap energy prices (and I count myself as one of these). DO NOT PANIC!

The company and Ofgem have published statements, but you are probably left wondering what do I do now?  Is my supply about to be cut-off? We’ve put together a little guide below with what we know so far as to what is going to happen.

  1. Most importantly, do not panic.  You will not be cut-off.  Ofgem have stepped in to ensure that your supply continues as normal.
  2. At some point in the next couple of weeks your supply will be transferred to another supply (by Ofgem).  You will be told probably by letter about this.  And, you will receive new account details from the new supplier.
  3. Take a meter reading as soon as possible! Unsure how?  Check out our guide on how to read your meter.
  4. Any existing credit you have in your GB Energy Supply account is protected.  You will either receive this back when your account is switched to a new supplier, or it will be transferred to the new supplier.
  5. It is advised that you don’t try and contact the GB Energy Supply customer service.
  6. Do not try and switch energy supplier now.  Due to the administration process this could risk you losing any money or credit you have in your GB Energy Supply account.
  7. Once you receive notification of your account switching to a new supplier, and you have all your new account details, undertake a price comparison to see if there is a better deal on the market.  Need help in the switching process?  Check out our guide.

At the moment the main piece of advice is DO NOT PANIC.  If you are worried and have questions don’t forget that you can get in touch with us via Twitter and Facebook.
