This weekend we were given an amazing opportunity to run our very first The Energy Community workshop at the ‘Small is…’ Festival in Bristol.
After weeks spent planning what our ‘Energy Workshop’ would contain it was really great to receive such positive feedback from those who attended. We kicked it off with some self reflection on how we use energy within our homes, and the bigger picture on how society uses domestic energy. By getting everyone to line up on a scale of ‘money-to-environment’, we also got a good idea of our attendees’ motivations for saving energy!
With motivations and views identified, it was then time to carry out a bit of energy speed dating – What motivates you to save energy in your home? What stops you saving energy around your home? Why don’t other people actively try to save energy? All these were discussed on the speedy 2 minute dates! This was great fun and a chance to get everyone talking to each other and meet new people too!
Next up we looked at what the perfect use of energy in our homes would look like – Would everyone only have cold showers? Would everyone cook a weeks worth of meals at one time? Would we throw away our TVs and exchange them for board games? Having ventured into a perfect world, we then brainstormed the barriers which stand in our way; lack of motivation, lack of awareness, lack of understanding and knowledge. As a group, we then got positive and discussed what could be done to solve these barriers under the themes of ‘People’, ‘Products and Technologies’ and ‘Education’ with each group pitching their proposed solution. Ideas ranged from smart appliances, to government lobbying, education and social support! Plenty of healthy debate followed, with a few lucky people receiving The Energy Community notebooks!
The event finished with everyone writing down and sharing their energy rant, telling all whether it’s the people leaving their lights on, those who have the heating on with the windows open or the government policies which annoy them most! We’ll be sharing some of these rants on our Facebook Page in the weeks to come, so keep your eyes peeled!
We’d like to thank the organisers at the ‘Small is…’ Festival for inviting us to run our workshop and all those who braved the very first of The Energy Community’s workshops!
Overall, we received some very positive feedback. This workshop format is just one of many we have lined up to run. We have a workshop to meet the needs of everyone! We’re always looking for new people to inspire. So if you are a community group, festival or anything else and you’d like us to run a workshop with you, please get in touch!

GB Energy Supply, one of the newest, and in the past cheapest energy suppliers, has ceased trading. 160,000 customers, have been attracted to the company over the past couple of years because of their market leading cheap energy prices (and I count myself as one of these).
